Androstenedione
Androstenedione is a natural hormone precursor manufactured in several organs in the body including the adrenals, ovaries and testes. In humans, androstenedione is converted by enzymes to the male hormone testosterone and the female hormone estradiol.
Today, one can buy synthetic forms of androstenedione. The product is widely sold over the internet and the entire industry appears to be unregulated. All the manufacturers of this precursor hormone claim that they have the most potent compound which will significantly increase testosterone production in the body. These same manufacturers claim that taking androstenedione, leads to bigger muscles, stronger body and a better athlete. Further one can recover much faster after an injury.
However, there is a lot of scientific evidence that indicates just the opposite. Taking androstenedione does not increase muscle mass, power or the ability to heal. Recent news about wrestlers and baseball players taking anabolic steroids are led to a clamp down on such substances.
Androstenedione is now classified as a controlled substance and is a banned anabolic steroid. The hormone once used as a performance enhancing drug is now considered illegal. Possessing, using or distributing it is associated with harsh penalties.
Besides being illegal, androstenedione also has potent side effects. In men it can cause severe acne, decreased the testicle size and reduce sperm production. In women, it produces features of masculanization, deep voice and loss of hair.
Another side effect of the product which is never mentioned by the dealers is that it also decreases the good “cholesterol”, thus putting the users at a high risk for developing premature heart attacks.
