Help for Your Memory- Ginkgo Biloba
By Susan M. Keenan ©2008
Ginkgo Biloba has been studied quite extensively for its restorative powers with more than 400 studies. It has been credited with the power to help restore memory for those who take it. This herb has also been credited with the capability of aiding digestion and alleviating respiratory problems.
The Chinese have been using Ginkgo Biloba for centuries, dating back to more than five thousand years of use. Primarily, the Chinese used Ginkgo Biloba as an herbal remedy for a variety of medical conditions or problems. Today, it is used extensively in France, the United States, and Germany as well as in China.
In fact, Ginkgo Biloba has already been given status as a phytomedicines in Europe. Phytomedicines are plant-based medicines. In order to be accepted for medical use, phytomedicines must undergo extensive testing. Ginkgo Biloba has been through numerous studies, each of which were quite intensive, to prove its usefulness and safety as a medicinal treatment.
Few side effects have been noted with the use of Ginkgo Biloba. Some individuals have reported experiencing occasional stomach indigestion or minor headaches. To date, no drug interactions have been discovered either.
Ginkgo Biloba is acquired from the ginkgo tree, one of the oldest tree species in the world. Plants used for medical purposes are studied from every angle. Each of the specific characteristics of it have been explored for use as a medicinal aid.
Perhaps Ginkgo Biloba specific composition of flavonoids, potent antioxidants, as well as two different kinds of terpene lactones is responsible for its healing properties. The antioxidants help to protect individuals from carcinogens. The flavonoids help to protect the blood vessels by providing strength to them. Additionally, the flavonoids aid Vitamin C in being useful to the human body, even in small doses.
The terpene lactones have been found to be of use in protecting the nerve cells of the human body. In fact, they will stimulate nerve cells to repair themselves if they become damaged. Moreover, due to the presence of terpene lactones in Ginkgo, glucose absorption is greater. Both of these aspects lead to an increased level of energy, a more efficient nervous system, as well as better health.
One of the most popular uses for Ginkgo Biloba is to boost memory and cerebral functioning. One of the unfortunate changes that humans experience as they age is the reduced functioning of the brain. This is partly due to the loss of brain cells, a reduced circulation of the blood, and a lower level of the glucose that is made available to the brain.
All of this leads to a reduced capacity for memorization, a variable mood swing, and a lengthening of reaction time. Although not everyone experiences all of these symptoms, most people experience at least some of them. Unfortunately, the variation in mood typically becomes one that leads people to fell slightly depressed.
Some individuals claim that the use of Ginkgo Biloba boosts their energy level. Since Ginkgo has been credited with increasing the production of adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, there is some credence to this claim. adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, is the energy molecule of the human body.
Ginkgo supplements are primarily promoted for cognitive enhancement. Small doses taken over a long period of time are noted for working quite well as a memory enhancer. In fact, as the memory improves, the individual’s mood or spirits tend to lift up as well.
Certain medical conditions have been treated with Ginkgo supplements with positive results. These include impotence, leg cramps, menstrual cramps, and ringing in the ears. None of the studies conducted in this area have reached conclusive results, however.
Anyone who is interested in taking Ginkgo supplements can find them in capsules, softgels, dried extracts, powders, and tablets. It is also possible to purchase dried Ginkgo leaves in order to brew Ginkgo tea. As with the use of any supplement, consult your physician before initiating the use of Ginkgo supplements in your diet.
