Is A Glucosamine Supplement Worth It?
Glucosamine is made from the outer shells of a variety of shell fish. The hard shell is crushed and processed. The compound has been used for many years in the treatment of osteoarthritis and a vareity of joint disorders.
It is believed that by taking glucosamine, one may be able to repair or develop the cartilage in the joints. There are many anecdotal reports about the effectiveness of glucosamine. Some claim that after taking glucosamine for months, they have no more knee pain, others claim that they can walk further, yet other claims that they recovered faster from joint injury and some claim that their range of movements in the joints is increased.
The medical establishment has evaluated the possible medical benefits of glucosamine in several double blind controlled trials and have found it to be no better than placebo.
The manufacturers recommend takingĀ 1500 mg of the glucosamine for many years, and perhaps indefinitely. Glucosamine is widely available over the internet and sold in most herbal and nutrition stores. While its medical benefits are dubious, at least the chemical has not been found to have any side effects or toxicity.
