What are Probiotics?
In the last decade there has been a lot of stuff written about Probiotics, but what are Probiotics?
Every one of us has billions of bacteria in the gut since birth. The function of these bacteria is to protect us against any other harmful bacteria that may enter via the gut. Probiotics are food supplements that contain similar “good” bacteria which may help us fight off infections and prevent new infections from setting in. It is believed by some that taking Probiotics can help the already residential bacteria in the gut fight off a variety of diseases and infections.
Probiotics are widely sold everywhere- from herbal stores to pharmacies. They come as foods which range from yogurt, milk, soy and some herbal drinks.
While not all Probiotics have been shown to be of medical benefit, there are some products like yogurt and soy which have been shown to:
- eliminate vaginal yeast infections
- cure urinary tract infections
- decrease the diarrhea which occurs with some antibiotics
- decrease episodes of asthma or allergies
- decreasing the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome
- eliminate the gas pains and bloating of premenstrual cycle
